We were last here five years ago in March very little fog compared to this July. I always associated "Fog = Winter = Cold" WRONG worst months on the Bridge are June, July and August, all to do with warmer waters, moisture and many other meteorological facts. The Bridge is 1.7 miles long including the approaches, at the centre point the winds can be incredibly strong so hold on to your hat! Mine blew off three times, then I lost my hair! We set off from the North Marin side in lovely warm sunshine, clear as a bell and around 24 degrees C by the time we reached the Southern City end you'd have thought we'd arrived in another city, it was thick fog, blowing a hooley, and 14 degrees C ! Nowhere to get a cuppa either only hot dogs, coke, coffee and ice cream .... reality check we were in the US ofA after all. After taking in all the facts and figures in the information centre, testing out the scale models we headed the 1.7 miles back the other way with the promise of tea to come.
This incredible structure, taken for granted by thousands every day, (how else would we cross the river?) is a feat of engineering perfection accomplished against all odds during the the depression, years before the onset of Health and Safety rules, regs and much ridiculous an as with the Hoover Dam and other engineering wonders around the world, it makes one wonder if the human race wasn't made of sterner stuff in the "Good Old Days!"
Perhaps you've walked the Bridge or yet to have this amazing experience but like me I hope it's something you think about.
