We had a lovely weekend recently in the beautiful El Chorro Lakes area of Andalusia with our daughter Nicky and her partner Richard, who's a climber. The area of El Chorro has some of the very best rock climbing in the whole of Spain. They had rented a farmhouse for 10 days through Owners Direct UK and invited to stay for a few days. It would have been lovely to have spent more time with them but unfortunately there are still parts of this planet where technology, of the internet variety, is non existent, this was one of them. John being without connectivity for more than 24 hours is like asking him to cook Sunday dinner, or any dinner come to that ..... impossible!!
I'd not been terribly well, having caught a virus when we were house sitting in Hay on Wye this turned into pleurisy, not pleasant so the prospects of a relaxing weekend was just what the doctor ordered. The hour long drive from Alhurain to Valle De Abdalajis, in Malaga Province, where they were actually staying, was through some stunning scenery. The directions to the farmhouse were very detailed, they had to be this was literally in the middle of nowhere ... I mean nowhere! We turned off a country road down a 3 km track which can only be described as less than a pot holed, dirt track and we were in a borrowed car, not a 4x4 or even a truck, but a friends ordinary, we drive on made up roads, car. Once we had navigated this "road" the car stayed put until we left the 4x4 hire vehicle Richard had would handle this much better!
We arrived to find the "children" had sorted everything for us, food, excellent wine, sleeping arrangements had even planned our trips out for the next two days. Nicky waited on us for every meal, cooked a wonderful paella on the Sunday evening. Poached eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast and when I asked if I could help she banished me from the kitchen .... it was LOVELY. I REALLY, REALLY, wished we could have stayed longer not just because we were spoiled but I absolutely adore my daughter being in her company is such a pleasure .... when she's not either tired or hungry (she's not perfect!)
The delightful village of Valle de Abdalajis is located in the southern part of the Antequera district in Málaga province and covers about 21 square kilometers. This is a mountain-side village, perched at 340 meters above sea level is set against the impressive backdrop of the Penibética range that rises above its whitewashed homes and cobblestone streets.
This area is ideal for rural living, a quiet holiday spent trekking, cycling, climbing, even just relaxing. On the other hand - if you're looking for adventure - hang gliding is also an option. In fact, the latter is so popuplar in this area that many call this the "Flight Capital" of Málaga, and aficionados from around the world come here to practice their favourite sport and enjoy the peaceful views that stretch out over the Guadalhorce Valley to the Mediterranean sea. It is within an hours drive from Malaga International Airport. It is aslo close to the village of Alora and the El Choro lakes.
