"Once upon a time there was a Spanish horse owner called Andres. He became unemployed and his horses got thinner and thinner until they could hardly stand. He decided to send them to a dealer to see if he could sell them for five hundred euros The mare and three month old foal were weak and the dealer expected them to die. The elderly bay mare was skeletal and so weak that she was badly attacked by the other twenty or so horses and mules in the corral. But the dealer loved horses and, in spite of only being paid five euros a day to feed all three horses, he did his best to save them. He contacted ARCH, the Andalucian Rescue Centre for Horses, to ask if they would take the horses. The owner had given him a week to sell them or they would go to the Barcelona slaughterhouse, twelve hours away. ARCH offered to take the mare and foal for two hundred and fifty euros to save them from slaughter, but their refuge was too full to take on another elderly mare, nor did they have the funds to purchase her. Andres, the owner, insisted - all three or nothing, and five hundred euros or they all die. ARCH called his bluff - no deal - we dont deal with blackmailers --to no avail. He called the lorry from the slaughterhouse to collect the three horses the following day. ARCH could not stand by and see a six year old mare and her emaciated three month old foal suffer the terrible journey to the slaughterhouse - and the battered elderly mare had once been somebody's pet - she deserved to live out her life in peace. So the charity called on all its supporters to help raise the five hundred euros to purchase the horses. We know it is pure blackmail by the owner. We dont bend to threats. But can we sleep at night knowing that we have refused to offer life to three horses whose only " crime" was to have an unscrupulous owner with no heart.? Instead of the journey to the slaughterhouse, the horses will now travel tomorrow to a shady field belonging to some of ARCH's supporters to begin their recovery from starvation. Probably they will always have problems - they are so weak. They will now receive good food, unlimited water and veterinary care. And ARCH will continue to ask its long suffering supporters and sponsors to help us pay the cost of saving them and for their ongoing care.
