Barnes London house sit came to an end, as all good things usually do ... roll on next year .... We had 24 hours between sits so I thought lets find a nice retreat in a country village en route to Brighton where our next house sit was waiting. Typing "Hotel within 40 miles of Brighton" into the Booking.com search box is akin to sticking a pin in a map, now I wont bore you with the search process will just get to the success of the final choice.
"Outstanding 9.5" "Superb 9.8" accolades for the George Inn Robertsbridge and I'm delighted to say absolutely deserved from the moment we stepped inside The George. We were greeted by Jane the owner, who could not have been more lovely (in every way) The atmosphere, staff, food, rooms in fact everything was wonderful. The same can't be said for the Village but then we had been spoiled in Suffolk ..........
"The village is thought to date back to 1176 when a Cistercian abbey was founded there by the Abbot, Robert de St Martin. When a market charter was granted in 1198 by Richard I to 'Robertsbridge' (Pons Roberti in Latin) it was the first recorded use of the name. The abbey was dissolved in 1538; however, the town flourished, and many of the oldest existing houses in the village date from the 14th and 15th centuries,[2] including The Seven Stars Inn on the historic High Street. Robertsbridge is also home to the Robertsbridge Codex (1360), a music manuscript of the 14th century. It contains the earliest surviving music written specifically for keyboard" ... info courtesy of Wikipedia
I'd recommend the George unreservedly, my advice about it's location do make certain you have lots planned within the area, don't rely on the "Historic Village of Robertsbridge I feel you may be slightly disappointed.
